The Roads in Costa Rica
Costa Rican road conditions are between regular (?) and bad depending upon the area you are visiting, and the time of year that you are driving. It is common to find pot holes in almost every route you take. This year the Government has started a process to repair and construct the roads and we expect that by the end of the year we will enjoy pretty good roads. In the central area from San José and San Carlos the roads are in good conditions, so in those areas, it is possible to drive with a small sedan type car without problems. For the rest of the country, we recommend vehicles with better clearance like the SUVs.
There is a lack of signs on our roads, a problem which is being solved, and now we are much better 5 years ago. In this case we recommend that you always carry a good road map and have very clear driving directions before you leave. In the country side, there will be friendly people happy to help you to find your destination, but you will need to speak Spanish. Also, it would be better to get directions from several Costa Ricans, as sometimes when they do not know the way, they are embarrassed to say so, and may give you wrong directions.
It is not permitted to cross the borders of our country with any of our cars, 4x4s or other vehicles, basically because our insurance will not cover any event in other countries
